Root canal therapy is a procedure designed to treat an infected or inflamed tooth pulp. The pulp, which contains the tooth’s nerves and blood vessels, can become infected due to deep decay, cracks, trauma, or repeated dental procedures. During the root canal treatment, the infected tissue is removed, the inside of the tooth is thoroughly cleaned and disinfected, and then sealed to prevent further infection.
You may need root canal therapy if you experience:
Intense pain while chewing or biting
Cracks or chips in the tooth
Prolonged sensitivity to hot or cold
Swollen or tender gums
Deep decay
The procedure involves removing the infected pulp, cleaning the root canal, and filling it to prevent future issues. In a follow-up appointment, a crown or other restoration will be placed to protect the tooth and restore its full function.
